Sweets and the {Cinematography} Interview Enny Olamide - Bricks Group Media | Vendor Spotlight

As a fellow creative, it's always fun to see other creatives in their element. Sometimes when we have a little time on our hands, we are able to stay and see the action. Well, a lot of times, we drop - go - run, to our next event, literally.  It's okay though, because the aftermath of the recap is always phenomenal. Over the years, I have been introduced to various types of wedding and event films in cinematography style, which are fascinating and eye-catching, but today, I would like to introduce to our long time colleague, Mr. Bricks Group Media himself, (Enny) Eniola Olamide.

“I’m the CEO and Creative Director of Bricks Group Media, a luxury wedding film company. ”

— Enny Olamide

E-N-N-Y! Tell our readers about yourself, who you are?  Where are you from?

Growing up in a Nigerian household, medicine, accounting, and law practice were the only acceptable careers to pursue in our family. Although my true passion was for music and creative arts, I graduated with a degree in banking and finance to honour my family's wishes, but I quickly realized it wasn't my calling to follow my passion for the arts.

I joined a musical group. While working with the group, we collaborated with a producer who helped us create and edit our music videos. When he was editing our content, I was really captivated while watching his process. My experience with the producer revealed that I was more of an introvert and enjoyed being behind the scene. After three years together, the group disbanded. I landed a position with Sound City TV, a well-known company in Nigeria that opened many doors, including a position with IBST media as a creative director.

After five years with IBST Media, I decided to take a chance and bet on myself. I made the decision to leave Nigeria and move to the United States to pursue my interest in the arts. I enjoyed my tenure at IBST Media, but it was time to step outside of my comfort zone and broaden my experiences. I attended the New York Film Academy and worked as a freelancer for various employers to make ends meet.

Today I'm the CEO and Creative Director of Bricks Group Media, a luxury wedding film company. My strong background in documentary-style production drove my interest in wedding filmmaking.

An artist you truly are! What’s your favorite dessert?

Oh that’s easy. Malva Pudding (Sponge pudding from South Africa)

You know I know not to make Malva, right? I am well diverse in the kitchen, lol. Let me know when you are ready. What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started making videos?

Oh yeah? You know where to find me, lol! I wish I was familiar with the jump cuts and the standard cuts. I was an amateur, but now I became proficient, so no more regrets!

It’s called learning your craft. I truly appreciate the thought process, time, and passion you have to become an expert in your craft. On that note, what influences you?

I am influenced by the different artists based on what I am looking for at that particular time, but the company that really influences me film is MARU FILM they based in the Netherlands.

You travel the world, seen so many beautiful places. Name one location that stands out and why?

Marrakesh, Morocco, is one of the fascinating places I have ever been to; I love the aesthetic, culture, and people.

You are so well diverse, I appreciate that about you. How do you recommend a client to get ready for a filming day?

For every client that books with us, there’s a mandatory meeting we coordinate to learn more about their personality type. This is important to us because we believe that a wedding film is one of your greatest lifelong investments, and creating those relationships help us to better tell your story.

So behind the scenes or in front?

I’m more of an introvert and enjoyed being behind the scene.

Ha. Okay. Take us in a day filming with Bricksgroup.

One of my core values is building and maintaining long-lasting relationships with all our clients.

Which you have and don’t forget us friendors! How have you dealt with somebody who wasn't comfortable with the camera?

Never forget the friendors! I usually provide sufficient instructions related to the video session to such types of people. I also boost their confidence by telling them that how good they will look on the camera. In this way, people can become more carefree and relaxed. I usually use a 135mm lens to provide my clients convenient distance. Some clients don't like it if the person who is capturing them comes into their personal space. I also use props to distract the attention of camera conscious people. In this way, they can feel comfortable with their surroundings and will not get distracted easily due to the camera. There is also no need to worry about making your clients extremely comfortable, so I let them act according to their mood. 😉

It’s always a mood. Can you recommend the computer specs which are essential for video editing?

For storage purposes, use solid-state drives because they are having a lot of space, and they work well, especially for 4k videos. Besides, the RAM should be 4GB. However, if there are some complex videos, then you should prefer using 16 GB RAM. It has also been seen that sometimes the need arises to transfer the videos from one device to another, so in this regard, I will recommend USB-C and USB 3.1 along with Thunderbolt. These ports are quite fast when it's about transferring larger files.

Can you recommend video softwares you have found the most effective?

Apple iMovie, and it is by far the best video software as it is quite easy to use. If you are an everyday user who loves to capture videos and photos, then you can also find it an effective one. I have also used Blackmagic Davinci Resolve for color corrections. It also allows you to edit the audio, so it's a complete jackpot. Hitfilm Express is the other software that I love, and I have personally used it. It always helped me to add special effects to many of my major projects. It also has some premium add-ons, so whoever will use it will surely love it. Finally, Adobe Premium Pro is my favorite one because it has everything you are looking for in other video software, like tons of amazing features that can make any of your video projects more ravishing.

What do you want to recommend to newcomer videographers?

I would like to suggest to the newcomers that they should also take breaks during the work. You can’t bound your eyes to cameras and computers. Your eyes also need rest. The newcomers should also select music sensibly for the videos, and it is also important that they protect themselves from copy-write strikes during the selection of music for the videos or other variety of images. Thus, they should prefer royalty-free images. The video files should also be managed perfectly. It is because, for instance, if a client comes to you to ask about a specific project, at that moment, you have to look into many files and folders for that specific one, and it might be very time taking. So to save your time and further workload, the best idea is that you manage all the files sensibly and keep them organized. In this way, when the need will arise, you can easily figure out where you have saved something important, and your client will also like your quick service.

How are you with handling deadlines?

As a professional and competent videographer, I must meet a lot of deadlines all at once because every time I take multiple projects, I challenged myself to accomplish the projects on time so that my client would be happy and willing to give me projects again. First, I noted the deadline and informed my client about the nature and complexity of the project and how much time it is going to take; then, I motivate my team to accomplish the work before the deadline and provide all the necessities relating to the project to my team. I also keep some cameras and other technology-related things for back up to avoid any future catastrophe.

Can you talk about that one skill that is essential to inculcate as a videographer?

As a professional videographer, I know many skills contributing to videography, but the essential skill is to meet the deadline because no one wants to give a filming project to a team that does not meet the deadline, getting the work done under pressure, and handling the film to the client on time make a videographer reliable and a man whose actions speak more than his tongue is certainly valued these days.

How do you keep yourself updated with the new video editing trends?

As a videographer, I keep myself updated regarding video editing trends to make more fascinating videos. I keep myself updated via contacts with many videographers who work on big scales, and I also keep myself updated on the internet, which is a great source of keeping a person informed about the world.

I know, I hit you with several questions at once, we are wrapping up soon. How do you offer feedback when you see someone performing not well on the camera?

It’s fine, we are always on the go and cherish this dearly! I first praise the person who handles the camera because I want to keep him encouraged and motivated to proceed in his career, then I proceed with constructive criticism; the first thing is to focus and be attentive while filming, the hand should not be shaking and must be stable so that pictures and films would be clear to catch the attention of the audience, movement of camera should be according to the requirement of specific situation and demand of scenario.

I wouldn’t say I have a favorite work for now, I still believe the best is yet to come however, if I could mention at least one I like ACEHOOD  and SHELAH’s wedding I did back in 2019, the couple were very authentic and easy to work considering the fact that they are both celebrity.
